Still life photographer Chris Peun’s mesmerizing and kaleidoscopic work takes objects such as flowers
(an ongoing preoccupation) and turns them on their head – often literally – to create a striking visual feast. His artist’s eye is shown to stunning effect here in his shoot for TWENTY6, where sumptuous jewellery pieces become masterpieces, whilst our interview gets a glimpse of the man behind the lens.
WHAT WERE YOUR AMBITIONS AND ASPIRATIONS AT THE AGE OF 26?
I guess my ambitions and aspirations were the same then as they are now. To enjoy my work, get better day-by-day and maintain a healthy career in photography. But back then I hadn’t found my niche or direction.
PICK A WORD BEGINNING WITH 'A' THAT BEST SUMS YOU UP...
FOR EACH LETTER OF THE ALPHABET PICK A WORD FOLLOWED BY A SENTENCE THAT TELLS US A STORY...
If I hadn’t become a photographer, I think I would’ve liked to have been an architect.
My favourite sushi joint.
His Subway series. Pictures on the New York subway system in the ‘70s. Moving.
The decade in which I grew up and for which I have a great, perhaps misplaced, nostalgia, particularly ‘80s films.
A current and ongoing project. A subject that is clichéd and has been done to death, but that is part of the challenge.
Seems to feature heavily and prominently in most of my work right now.
Having an Oriental father I’ve become very picky about Asian food. This is one of the best meals I’ve had in an extremely long time.
IN AND OUT BURGER
A different urge to H. Equally satisfying however.
Often dark but always beautiful. Feels to me like a hybrid of literature and poetry.
My newly adopted sports team.
Generally a friend of mine, however this one has been the most difficult to complete.
Animation is not just to be enjoyed by kids.
When I am most productive, free from distraction and able to focus 100%.
Literally a national treasure.
POST RANCH INN
A stunning (rather expensive) hotel that I hope to be fortunate enough to stay in one day.
One of the simplest and most achievable of adventures.
Practice makes perfect.
For all the basics.
VIA DELLA PACE
A great restaurant and favourite hang out in NYC.
WORDS WITH FRIENDS
My current obsession.
Sorry, got nothing.
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK
A quality of light that needs to be seen to be believed. Even the genius of Ansel Adams couldn’t quite capture the true magic of it.
