Chris Duffy: The 80's Retrospective
Chris Duffy was ‘born with a camera in his hand’, the son of legendary 60s photographer Brian Duffy.
Chris grew up with the godfathers of fashion photography David Bailey and Terence Donovan. It was almost inevitable photography would play a huge part in his life, and as soon as he was old enough he started working as 3rd assistant in his father’s studio (making coffee, sweeping floors, being available 24/7 and, occasionally, picking up a camera). In time he graduated to become hi father’s right-hand man, ensuring an extraordinary apprenticeship.
During the 80s Chris ran his own successful studio in London working on a wide variety of commissions from the music business (Adam Ant, Steve Strange, Sade, David Bowie) and celebrity portraits (Jimmy Nail, Terence Stamp, Rachel Weisz), to fashion and beauty national magazines, the Sunday glossies, advertising and PR clients.
When Chris started to collect material for exhibition he soon realized his back catalogue had not been seen since it was shot in the 80s and therefore decided to present a snapshot of this era. It is interesting to see this particular time frame of a period that remains so unique, distinct and evocative, creating a rarely seen retrospective of what was hot in the 80s.
